This is Why People Fear the ‘Internet of Things’

Think of how insecure the average computer is, how quickly software stops getting security updates and the constant battle to keep it from being compromised. Then imagine the lowest common denominator, far simpler and less secure ‘smart devices’ that are treated as disposable appliances and updated as such, but with the same internet and local network access as computers. The security of your network is only as good as the weakest point.

“Given the seemingly cavalier attitude and the almost certain lack of automatic updates, it is almost certain that these devices are remotely exploitable,” he added. “It is no wonder that Director of National Intelligence James Clapper is worried about the Internet of Things, how many government officials have or may unwittingly install potential spies like this in their home.”
