Valve’s Gabe Newell discusses the frontiers of gaming, from wearable technology to “tongue controllers”

Another week, another Windows 8 bashing. This time from none other than Gabe Newell, CEO/founder of Valve, responsible for such titles like Portal, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Team fortress and Counterstrike. Just for good measure, the VP of Game Design at Blizzard (you might have heard of Starcraft, World of Warcraft, Diablo) also weighed in against poor old Windows 8.

Now, admittedly they have a vested interest in their own title distribution platforms, away from Microsoft’s closed and profit-sharing Windows marketplace. Also interesting to note that shortly after, Valve distributed this article (http://goo.gl/hXcjz), outlining OpenGL’s (a cross-platform graphics library) superiority over DirectX, even under Windows.

“I think that Windows 8 is kind of a catastrophe for everybody in the PC space. I think that we’re going to lose some of the top-tier PC [original equipment manufacturers]. They’ll exit the market. I think margins are going to be destroyed for a bunch of people. If that’s true, it’s going to be a good idea to have alternatives to hedge against that eventuality.”
