George Hotz, Sony, and the Anonymous Hacker Wars

Great read about George Hotz, the wandering hacker mind behind the cracking of the iPhone and PS3. Incidentally, last time I checked, Sony loses close to $1b a year from PS3 sales, recouping it on game, subscription and accessory purchases. However, Apple takes 75% of the price of an iPhone as profit, with app sales and ongoing subscriptions a minuscule proportion of that.

“Nervous but curious, Hotz walked into the building eating from a box of Lucky Charms, dropping marshmallows across the lobby. “If there were going to be lawyers there,” he recalled, “I was going to be the biggest asshole ever.” Instead, he found a roomful of PS3 engineers who were “respectful,” he said, and wanted to learn more about how he had beaten their system. During the next hour or so, the man who had started the hacker wars described his methodology.”
